Radio Repeaters Extend the Range of VHF and UHF Two Way Radios

To get the maximum possible range for a radio transmitter, the radio's antenna should be up as high as possible. That is why professional radio installations, business, government agencies, police fire and emergency services all have their radio antennas placed up as high as possible. And they often use radio repeaters as well.

Difference between FRS and GMRS two way radios

I don’t understand whet the difference is between FRS radios and GMRS radios,  especially since some two-way radios you can buy seem to have BOTH.

Can anyone help clarify things for me?  Thank you.

I can hear police radio communications with my FRS radio

I’m listening to FRS channel 6 on a cheap bubble pack walkie talkie radio, and I can clearly listen to the L.A. Sheriff’s Department. They’re busy following two females at the moment.

Let’s just hope that some criminal doesn’t have an FRS radio like mine so he can listen to them as well. Those radios are just so cheap to buy, anyone could afford one or two.

Oh, and this isn’t just an occasional incident, it’s a 24-7 thing.

Should I report it to the FCC or the LASD?

Handheld Radio Channels

I recently bought myself a VHF Marine band portable walkie talkie radio. It was going cheap and I couldn’t resist a bargain.

What I need it for is to use it as an FRS radio. I plan on usingit when I’m out hiking and for stuff like that.

Are the VHF Marine band channels the same as the FRS  radio channels, and if not, can I reprogram them for the Family Radio Service?

The handheld marine transceiver I bought was made by Midland.
