A typical 2 way radio headset/mic combination. this one is from Panasonic.
Two way radio headsets are used in noisy environments to cut out deaden the sounds of outside noise, and allow the 2-way radio operator to hear the incoming audio messages as clearly as possible.
Most two way radio headsets cover both your ears, and some of these two-ear headphones also include a small boom microphone which curves across the operator’s jaw and which places the sensitive end of the mic just in front, or to the side, of his mouth.
A typical two-ears and a mic headsets would be those used in small aircraft and helicopters, where the noise of the engine is so loud that normal speech is impossible. It high-noise environments like this, the two way radio headsets use a noise-canceling microphone to block the outside noise.
A noise-canceling mike captures a sample of the unwanted external noise and subtracts it electronically from the sound of the radio operator’s own voice. What is left is the wanted part, just the operator’s voice.
Other mic headsets are more discreet, such as the earphone/microphone headsets used by security guards, law-enforcement personnel and tactical military units.
Some radio transceivers or their headsets can have a built-in voice-operated relay (commonly known as a VOX). This hands-free device triggers the radio’s transmit circuit whenever you speak into the microphone, which can be useful when your hands are busy – for example if you are driving a car.
The downside of having a VOX on your two way radio headsets is that the radio usually misses the first part of whatever word you speak first, so you may have to repeat the first word or two. And if you have the bad habit of cursing at other drivers, your mouthing off can be broadcast to everyone else using that channel… which will get you into trouble. But don’t repeat those bad words, whatever you do!
