Kenwood TS-50 ham radio transceiver

Kenwood TS-50S ham radio transceiver

Kenwood TS-50S ham radio transceiver

The little Kenwood TS-50S radio transceiver is an easy to use and master HF radio for Amateur Radio use that is still a strong favorite with many hams all around the world. Despite its compact size, it can transmit on all the ham bands from 160 meters through to 10 meters.

The TS-50 is a great general-coverage radio receiver as well, as it can also receive radio signals anywhere between 500 KHz and 30 MHz. This allows you to hear AM radio broadcasts, foreign broadcast stations on short wave and some aeronautical, land mobile and ships’ HF radio telephone transmissions.

When it came out, it was the smallest 100 watt ham radio you could get. It was less than 6 ½ pounds in weight and measured just 7 1/16 x 3 3/8 x 9 3/16 inches. The TS50 operates on 12 volts DC power and can transmit LSB, USB, AM, FM and CW signals. So it handles voice, morse code and some digital modes such as RTTY or PSK.

Power levels on the TS-50 can be switched easily between 5, 50 and 100 watts. It has 100 memories for your favorite frequencies and channels, and has a simple menu system. It has IF shift, which can help reduce interference from nearby stations and an effective noise blanker which helps when you’re using it in a moving vehicle.

Accessories for the Kenwood TS 50 include a steel mounting bracket so the transceiver can be filled inside a vehicle for mobile operation. Kenwood also made the AT-50, a small automatic antenna tuning unit (ATU) that matches the TS-50 in size and looks — so they look great together as a base station in your shack. While for mobile work, the TS50 radio can be mounted in your car or truck with the AT-50 ATU tucked away out of sight in the car’s boot (trunk).

The little Kenwood AT-50 ATU has a wide tuning range, which allows the HF bands to be worked from just a 9-foot steel CB whip antenna without too much loss.

So if you are looking for an affordable two way radio for use on the amateur radio HF bands, then it is well worth your while to buy a pre-loved Kenwood TS-50 transceiver. You will probably fall in love with it yourself!
