How can I get a further range with a CB radio?

I’ve recently bought a CB radio and 3 foot antenna from Walmart (which is probably why I am having trouble). But my range to transmit is far too short. It is only 50 yards or so.

Is there a way to fix the CB so I get a further range?

  1. John says:

    Purchase a quality antenna.

You didn’t say how much you paid for it, but 50 yards isn’t enough even for a kids toy radio.

Replace the radio in the box or bubble pack it came in and go back to the store and get a refund if you can.

See if you can pick up a second-hand CB radio from a flea market or a car boot sale someplace. Try and get a known brand-name like Midland, Uniden or Cobra, and see if you can get a CB handheld with at least 3 Watts power.

You may have to pay more than your ‘bargain’ from Walmart, but you should be able to get a two-way that will work half a mile or even more. And a mobile CB radio has a 5 watts AM signal, but it does need some installation in a vehicle or in the home. It also needs a 12 volt car battery or a 12 volts, 2 amp (or more) power supply.

    Good luck, and have fun!
