What is the longest range two-way radio I can buy?
The longest-range portable radio I could find an ad for was only a 12-mile radio. I want to be able to get out a lot further than that. What would you suggest?

Assuming you are talking about a hand-held radio and are in the US:
Without a licence, you can get a .5 watt FRS radio for about 2 miles of range. Next up would be a handheld CB radio (if they still make them) with 3-5watts for about 5 miles of range.
WITH a licence, you can get a GMRS radio for about 5 miles of range:

WITH an amateur radio licence, you could get a 6 meter or 2 meter radio for up to 10 miles range, up to a 100 miles with a repeater.
