Longest range 2-Way Radio?

My boyfriend and I were thinking about purchasing 2-way radios. He works about 50 miles away (driving distance) but without all the twists and turns of driving, its only about a 25 miles distance. I was wondering if there were any 2-way radios that would pick up at that distance. I know they make 30 mile range radios, but I also understand that’s with optimal conditions.

We live in a rural area. Wouldn’t really have interference from other people. No large buildings to block the signal. Would mainly just have to overcome natural landscape. (hills, valleys, etc)

I guess my two main questions are:

Is there a 2-way radio that will REALLY work at this level?

If so, what kind?

If not, what’s the longest distance that you know of? (And what kind?)
Okay, I meant my main questions. (Not two main questions… Cause there’s more than two there.) Lol.

Thanks in advance!!

    Curious,

You could do it, but it might be more involved than you might want to undertake.

Generally speaking you would need line of sight between you and your beau. If both of you can get to a high spot like a hill or a tall building so that you have line of sight between you or if you or he are on high ground that looks down to the other you might be able do it with CB or family band radios if you can find a clear channel. The audio might be a little noisy, but it could be kinda fun. Give it a try. If you have line of sight 25 miles is not too far.

Heck, I can see the buildings in downtown Dallas 25 miles away from my back yard. I wouldn’t have a problem with a hand held radio talking to someone in a building in downtown Dallas from my back yard. I frequently talk to other hams via our ham radio satellites with my hand held radio (Yes, we have had about 70 ham radio satellites launched and FYI there is a ham radio station aboard the International Space Station for use by the astronauts but that’s another story). The satellites are 250 to 300 miles up or more. No problem.

If it doesn’t work with standard radios then you have to consider directional antennas and that probably starts getting too involved for you.
