TX Error with my Yaesu FT-857 and FT-897 Radios

Hi David

How was the weekend? I understand that many “hamsters” enjoyed themselves.

I had the most frustrating time over the weekend with both my radios. You might recall that I have a Yaesu 857 and an Yaesu 897. A pigeon pair! Anyway, I am having a very difficult time getting them to transmit on 2m or 70cm USB, I keep on getting a TX ERROR.

I played around most of the day Saturday and eventually was able to tx OK. I was able to speak with a couple of VK2s then all of a sudden the radio went back to TX ERROR. I had downloaded the radio profile when it was working and uploaded that profile and the radio works again!

Am I correct in thinking you have one of these radios and if so are you able to provide any advice please?

What is left of my hair is rapidly diminishing!

Cheerio,

John

Hi John,

I do indeed own an FT-857D, but it is not my main radio. I use it as a portable and emcomms radio when I go away on weekends to play radios, as you described, “with the other hamsters”. Chuckle. I will transfer the photos and some video I shot of the event, and will try to do something interesting with them soon.

I have never experienced the problem(s) you describe when using my transceivers. However the fact that you have two similar radio transceivers and they both have the same problem on VHF, I’d suggest that points to an operator mistake … Especially since reloading a backup of your earlier settings into both radios fixes the problem!

Normally I would also have suggested you consider there may have been an antenna or feedline/coax problem. In that case, if the radios were able to TX okay into a dummy load, then your antenna system would be suspect. Narrow things down by the process of elimination! But in fixing the problem by re-uploading the previous configuration, you show that something in your settings is the likely suspect.

I do suggest your best course of action is to go to groups.yahoo.com — That’s Yahoo Groups — and do searches there for FT-857D and for FT-897D and join both groups. Introduce yourself, and see what the brains trust there has to offer. Search through their old messages to see is anyone has reported the same problems.

You should also join your local amateur radio club, because your fellow hams that you meet face-to-face. They are always going to be your best bet.

Kind regards,

David Harvey, VK2DMH
