Connecting Up a CB Radio

My mom said she is going to buy me a CB radio for my birthday.
I have never used a two-way radio before, so I want to know… Will I need to have an antenna for the radio, and how do I connect the thing? Can I power it from the household electric supply?

What you need depends on what type of CB radio you buy. If you buy a handheld CB radio (also called a walkie-talkie) it will already have some sort of whip antenna and will run off batteries that are inside the transceiver. The best types use rechargeable battery packs, which will save you from having to buy new batteries all the time. If you end up with a base station CB radio, then you will need to put up an external aerial (antenna), which will cost more money and time and effort to set it up right. Most CB base stations can plug into the 110V AC mains supply. CB radios designed for mobile use in cars and trucks will need an external power supply (approx 12V DC), plus an external antenna. You will need help to set this all up. Perhaps you can find a ham radio club in your area. That’s what the internet is good for!
