A Motorola handheld 2-way business radio
Business 2 way radio transceivers are those two-way radios classified by the FCC for use on frequencies reserved exclusively for business use.
UHF Business Radios have 56 available frequencies, and the VHF Business Radios have 27 frequencies you can choose from.
With most portable handheld business 2 way radios, not all of these frequencies can be programmed into the transceiver at the same time. This is not a problem because most users will only need one or two frequencies/channels. But do check how many of the available channels your set can have programmed into it.
Both VHF and UHF radio signals tend to work line-of-sight, but the radio waves have slightly different characteristics which may help you to decide whether a VHF or a UHF transceiver will work best for you.
UHF frequencies work better for communicating within steel and concrete structures. This makes them well suited to working indoors within a large multi-floored building, as in any city.
VHF frequencies are better suited to working outdoors and in, or around, wooden buildings and structures.
The maximum distance you can expect your Business Radio transceiver to operate depends on whether or not you have a reasonably-clear view or line-of-sight between you and the other station you are trying to reach. The higher the power (in Watts) that your set can transmit at, the longer distance you can expect.
Most handheld Business two way radios (a.k.a. walkie talkies) will have a transmit power of between 1 and 5 Watts. However, the higher the transmit power you use, the quicker your batteries will run down. So its a good idea to know how long your battery pack is going to last.
Some Business 2-way radio sets allow you to slip two AA batteries inside the radio so you can keep going when your rechargeable battery pack becomes exhausted.
